Filmmaking / Directing : A bit of market research... by Bill Hartin

A bit of market research...

Backstory: Three years ago, when the seeds for FIFO (Fade In/Fade Out), a Filmmaking Consortium in the Lehigh Valley, PA, were sown, one of our overriding goals was to provide widespread exposure for filmmakers - especially for short films. After running the film fest circuit, two of my early short films sit gathering dust on a shelf, and I suspect many other Stage 32 filmmakers have at least that many short films sitting idle, not doing a bit of good for their careers. So...how many of you are willing to share your early short film efforts strictly for widespread exposure while also helping other filmmakers produce their short films through the non-profit efforts of FIFO? That's it. I will appreciate and value any and all feedback. Thanks in advance.

Hey Bill, good aspiration, how do you see FIFO working?

Bill Hartin

in short, FIFO is a non-profit that uses its limited funds to allow filmmakers to produce projects our executive committee deems are of high quality. We have solicited short scripts from various social media sites, Stage 32 being the most prominent and fertile source to date. Our first short film, TIGERS IN THE SOUP, was acquired in this way and is now making the festival circuit. Each project is different. While we are open to any and all genres, one necessary, overriding consideration must be the associated budgets, so naturally we really like clever, impactful short scripts in the 1-10 page range with limited locations and costs. For example, even as founder of FIFO, I couldn't get my 20-page script, with four locations, past our review panel. The two short films we are working on right now - a one-pager and a 10-pager - both utilize single locations, limited casts and no CGI or FX. But once we start attracting funding we hope to expand the number of films as well as the scope. The model I described in my "market research" post might be a way to raise funds for future films but it is still in the planning stages, so more later. Hope that helps.

Thanks Bill that's really useful... so do you want us to send you scripts, or links to finished filsm... not sure what it is you're asking us to do... but of course happy to try and help.

Bill Hartin

FIFO is always interested in receiving short scripts for consideration. I posed the "market research" question as a way to get a feel for how filmmakers feel about sharing their past short films for widespread exposure, if I end up putting together the project I envision. And as a screenwriter/filmmaker, I always enjoy receiving links to others' works. Thanks.

@Bill - links to my produced work (shorts) can be seen at http://www.anthonycawood.co.uk/my-films/ Details of my avaiable scripts on the site too. Anthony

Sorry for the oversight. Scripts can be sent to fifolv@gmail.com and our website is fifolv.org.

Bill Hartin

Depending on our shooting schedule, we plan to be there. Thanks. And hope you can make it up for a FIFO meeting.
