Screenwriting : Bonfire Night! by Vic Burns

Bonfire Night!

This story isn't, (I guess) as familiar to those of you in the US, but here in the UK - the 5th of November (always remember) is as big a deal (probably bigger) as Halloween to us Brits here.

In 1605, Guy (Guido) Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament - big fail.

Yada, yada, yada - Fawkes eventually went to the hangman's noose (kinda).

So, every 5th November here, every village/town/city here has a big bonfire with a Guy Fawkes effigy burned atop whilst kids run around with sparklers eating toffee apples to a huge fireworks backdrop.

How would you write his story now in 2020?

Maybe, all those effigy's come to life one night and march on Parliament en masse?

Maybe he carried 'the truth' and his message was never delivered...

Time traveller. Guy comes to current UK and is horrified. He plots again.

Craig Prickett

I know that during Guy Fawkes execution by Drawing and Quartering he jumped off the stool in an attempt to break his neck.Unfortunately for him the rope snapped so the hanging portion designed to numb the victim before the dismembering never took place. So if I was going to go supernatural thriller I'd work that in somehow causing a blood curse in some distant relatives DNA awakening and causing them to carry out Guy Fawkes plan in the modern world.Or maybe just tell Guy Fawkes story in the modern world replacing the Catholic vs Protestant thing with extreme right wing vs extreme left wing. And just create modern characters.setting and scenarios to play out the historic story.

V for Vendetta . . .

Indeed but I was thinking something more in the vein of IN The Loop or perhaps the Italian series Bella Ciao. With BREXIT you've got opportunities regarding the Good Friday Agreement and Scottish independence that may have some parallels to Elizabethan events to create character motivations.Just a thought anyway.
