I wrote my first screenplay and it's ready for copyright. After the copyright, do a submit to agents because I have to register with the WGAE. Do I submit it to contests, other sites? Anything that would help me. Thank you.
Kellie, you already have protections under "copyright" as the original creator of a fixed work, i.e., a screenplay. One does not go get copyright -- a common misconception. You may register a claim of copyright with the LOC. A simple, single registration costs $35. A registration with WGA only lasts 5 years, then they wipe it from their database. Personally, I only register a claim with the LOC. Plus copyright protection lasts your lifetime... +75 years, I think? I forget? A quick, simple search online would yield much information. It's easy. Common practice. No big deal. ;)
As far as submitting... Perhaps get some feedback first? It's gotta be market ready. Submit to reputable contests with tangible prizes or offerings that may help you or make connections for you. ;)
And you may need to have far more scripts under your belt before approaching an agent; they typically wish to represent a writer who can produce much work and proves to produce solid work -- that's how they make money. But hey, you never know! Every situation and person is different. ;)
Anyway, congratulations on finishing your first script! That's a great accomplishment! ;)
That's what I meant about the LOC. Thank you Beth for this wonderful advice. I am writing a whole TV series by myself and putting together a story for another screenplay. Once again thank you so much!
A contest or two (ie:The Page, Blue, Stage32) try to pay for feedback So you know the strength & weaknesses in your story. Lastly buy pitch sessions here on S32, I personally like the Live Skype better, but if you rather do a written pitch, they give more to cover as live pitches are only 8 minutes. Good luck and keep us posted.
Kelly. I don't have time right now but if you send me the first few pages I can take a look at them. I've written over 30 features so I kind of got this crap down.

Kellie. Since this is your first screenplay you might want to get someone with more experience read it over to see if you are making any mistakes.
Dan. Who can do that on S32?
