Screenwriting : Graphic novels by Patricia Santos Marcantonio

Graphic novels

I'm a novelist and screenwriter, but I'm working on a graphic novel with a talented artist. It's kind of a Latino Tales of the Crypt. I've read books, but want to hear from real people who might have navigated the graphic novel world. Thanks for any advice

Bo Bigelow

Hi Patricia, Last year I wrote a graphic novel. It was a really fun and amazing process -- kind of like screenwriting but more vivid in a way. This is an exciting time in comics and graphic novels, because there are suddenly so many publishers, reviewers, and above all, readers. Whatever you do, be sure to get as many reviews as you can -- just send advance copies of your book to reviewer sites like Comic Bastards and Buyindiecomics.com. Another thing that's brought me a lot of sales is going to comic conventions -- it's my favorite way to connect directly with fans. Good luck with your GN!

Thanks Bo for the great advice. did you have a publisher or did you self-publish?

Bo Bigelow

I self-published. It's a bit of a hard road, and I definitely learned a lot. I wrote a couple of posts about my experience: http://www.bobigelow.com/2013/04/how-i-self-published-my-graphic-novel.html and http://www.bobigelow.com/2013/05/one-thing-i-wish-id-known-when-i.html Hope this helps -- always happy to help another GN writer.

I'll check out your blogs and forward them on to the artist who's working with me. This is exactly what we were looking for. Thanks Bo

I'm also working on a graphic novel and I'm acquainted with the likes of Barron Storey and Gaiman. I'm a Production Designer, but always have other irons in the fire (laugh). I have also done illustrations for an Hyperion book, which is Disney's publishing arm and my experience is that it is harder to publish an art book than a novel because of the expense. If I can help with questions please write.

Thanks so much. I'm sure I'll have questions. The artist has shown me the first story and it's fantastic.

Thanks Jamie!
