Screenwriting : Is it good? by Steven M. Cross

Steven M. Cross

Is it good?

I'm writing a very intense screenplay, so intense that sometimes I just have to put it down and walk away from it for a while. Naturally, I think this screenplay is fantastic ... or will be when I finish it completely. Now, what do you believe is the absolute best way to get an idea if it is really good or if it is simply delusion? What would some of you do if you wrote what you think is a great script? How would you check yourself?

Tabitha Baumander

finish the work. Let it rest for a bit and work on something else to clean your mental gears. Go back to it when you can look at it like a writer and not a character having the adventures that are being written about. A little time always helps you see what you have written not what you wanted to write.

Debbie Croysdale

@Tabitha is right. Take time away and do not let it have a stranglehold on your thoughts. Don’t test it yourself, put it out there and feed back will come naturally. Even if it is a “Delusion” many a script has been turned into a film based on delusion.

William Martell

Finish it. Then read your 5 favorite screenplays (not the same as your 5 favorite movies)... then read yours. If one of these things is not like the others?

Dan MaxXx

i give my script to my agent and readers I respect/trust (my main readers are a produced Studio writer, a brain surgeon, and a VFX supervisor) and if they read it in one seating without interruptions- a page turner, I know the idea/concept has legs, or it's a decent writing sample

Eric Sollars

Finish it while you are feeling the excitement of the story. That is tough to experience. After the first draft send it out for reading by trusted family, friends, and professionals.

Craig D Griffiths

This is subjective to the audience. Let’s discount the writing. We will assume that you have written it well.

All stories have an audience. The question is, “Can your screenplay be made into a film and shown to its audience and make money?”

If the answer is yes. Then you have a chance of selling it.

In a nutshell. There are no bad ideas, just ideas that aren’t worth writing. If your idea produces a large emotional response in you it probably will in others.
