Screenwriting : Loglines by Dirk Patton

Loglines

Maybe everyone already knows this but I just realized something after watching my wife scroll through the Direct TV on-screen guide in search of a movie to watch. Direct TV uses the movie's logline as their synopsis in the guide. It's only taken me close to a decade to notice this.

Anyway, if you weren't aware and want to get a fast and easy logline education, scroll through the premium channels and stop on any movie you are familiar with and read the "synopsis" in the guide.

Wonder what else is in plain sight that I've never noticed

They certainly are a good way to get used to familiarising yourself with reducing a story's premise down to a line or two, but the best loglines tend to include a little more specific ingredients than what is often found on these TV guide synopses. If you'd like to chat a little more about this, by all means message me.

A person at my work often uses this quote. “I am sending you a long letter because I didn’t have time to write a short one”. Condensing is harder than expanding.
