Read books on screenplays.

First off check on the copyright. If the story is old enough, it may be in public domain. You want to be sure before you start. If it is not in public domain, you will need to contact the author, or the agent.

If you need to check out books on how to write a screenplay - for the actual act of writing - there are excellent guides to learning the rules of format and how to tell your story with visuals and images. Here are a few that I recommend: 1. The Hollywood Standard - by Christopher Riley - an excellent guide to Script format and style with thousands of worked examples to illustrate different ways to approach things 2. How Not to Write a Screenplay - by Flynn but reading screenplays also will help massively when learning to approach how to tell your story. Especially if you can find scripts with similar story devices / genres to the one you're approaching. For instance when i want to learn how to write a certain action sequence, especially one that jumps around in location and the number of people I want to move around the screen, I tend to think of a similar film and see if I can read that screenplay online, in order to see how that scene may have been written - purely as a guide for how to approach mine. Hope that helps. Good luck!
