Screenplay competitions

Hi everyone My name is Adam Mawson I recently entered my first screenplay competition with the Los Angeles Cinefest. Already it's a semi-finalist, I've entered it into other screenwriting contests just to get myself out there. It's my first screenplay I'm getting great feedback which I'm quite surprised at as I've been told first screenplays are usually rubbish and that it takes a few before you become a master of the art. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get representation from i.e. (Agent).

Find a copy of Hollywood Representation Directory 2016/17, Hollywood Screenwriting Directory or Hollywood Creative Directory 2016/17. https://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Screenwriting-Directory-Spring-Summer/dp/1440352151/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508791288&sr=8-1&keywords=Hollywood+Screenwriting+Directory

But make sure your script is really ready before submitting. Get it professionally read through a script doctor, you'll get lots of notes.

Buy used it's cheaper or call Barnes Nobles 3rd Street Prominade , Santa Monica and see if they have the latest LA411, search small production companies and call them if you can browse at their office. Make sure you copyright all your stuff first http://www.copyright.gov and http://www.wgawregistry.org/webrss/.

Thanks Ken it's been copyrighted great I'll take a look at that directory.

You don't have to go the old Hollywood route, you can spend years back and forth developing. It can happen, but statistically, getting a good picture deal is like winning the lottery. There are many ways to do things independently which gives you more control and freedom. Submit to https://www.inktip.com/index.php and you can pitch to Bob at http://www.moviepitch.com.

My impression is that placements in screenplay competitions aren't a big deal to agents and managers unless we're talking the Nicholl and a handful of other contests. What impresses them more--and perhaps even more than, say, a Nicholl semi-finalist script--is a saleable concept (coupled with at least decent execution).

That's where you start unless you know someone. Emails and PDFs are free so I would send it to every agent with links and follow up periodically. Make sure you have a kickass cover letter. I personally don't subscribe to the Hollywood route anymore, I am purely independent freedom loving. Everyone in LA is chasing the deal - If I had a screenplay today I wanted to make, I'll find money outside the system, shoot it and distribute independently. You'll actually make more profit.

I'll recommend Jessica Brody in LA, she's an author, teacher, screenwriter who now has a 3 picture deal with a major studio. She's someone who teach and do at the same time. She'll give you the step by step breakdown of how she got the deal - http://www.jessicabrody.com. Connect with her before she gets big. Of course all this depends on your talent as a screenwriter.

Agents want to rep screenwriters that can write well-written marketable screenplays on a regular basis so if you only have one you might want to wait till you have a few more before approaching agents. Also they are extremely difficult to get so you might start out looking for a manager instead. Good luck.
