You often hear folks say that their ideas have been stolen. The answer is that lots of folks have similar ideas to which many say pish posh. Well I'm going to give you the perfect case of similar ideas by folks from a world away. I'm writing a TV series that deals with a detective that investigates supernatural crimes. I've been working on it for awhile. I've pitched and even had one of my drafts critiqued. Along comes Netflix with the animated series Trese which is about a detective that investigates supernatural crimes (excellent series by the way). The series is based on a Filipino comic book that I've never heard of. Am I discouraged? No. Just shows the premise I have is solid. Also gives me an opportunity to use it as a comparable since its successful. Also my take is quite a bit different. Remember that we live on a planet with close to 7.9 billion people. Not surprising that different folks would have similar ideas. I always say it's all about the execution.
Even Michael Scott had the same issue! :D

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Tarantino is an expert of taking ideas from other movies and adding his own spin. Chris Nolan said the Dark Knight's visual look was inspired by Michael Mann movies. Barry Jenkins said his storytelling style is influenced by Wong Kar Wai & Jonathan Demme movies. Supposedly, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin's idea of a new Batman was inspired by "Se7en" movie. So on, so on, folks in this business study peers, dead or living.
