Perhaps this isn't the appropriate website to pose this question. But after reading Blake Snyder's book, "SAVE THE CAT! The Last Book On Screenwriting That You'll Ever Need". I find myself watching movies and thinking about what Blake Snyder "genre" it can fall under. Curious as to what Blake Snyder genre do you think the hit film, "Straight Outta Compton" would fall under? Which of the 10 Blake Snyder genres would any music bio-pic ("Walk The Line", "Ray", etc) fall under? Golden Fleece? Superhero? I apologize in advance if this question is inappropriate for this website. If it is, please let me know and I will take it down.
Hi Teofilo. Well, refreshing my memory of Save the Cat's 10 genres and having to choose between them, I'd have to say Rites of Passage and/or Institutionalized. "Straight Outta Compton" is a story about artists fighting to have their voices heard. It's about change -- societal, personal, and a "rags to riches" tale. It's also about a group of people with a common cause. I haven't seen the movie but I've read some great reviews. :) As far as other music bio-pics fitting into the Save the Cat genre descriptions... Rites of Passage would probably fit most as they are typically change of life stories. :)

Seremein ("Thanks" in the Garifuna Language) for writing, @Beth Fox Heisinger. Yes, I was thinking that the "Straight Outta Compton" screenplay most likely falls under the Rites Of Passage genre. It probably also falls under other Blake Snyder categories as well, Beth. Despite what anyone thinks of "Straight Outta Compton" as a movie, I find it fun breaking these kinds of movies down.
Isn't Straight out of Compton a biopic? Genre: Drama, about the life of aspiring rap-artist like Ice Cube and others?? A great story and critically acclaimed film that has been number one at the box office for three weeks straight, sending a message to film makers that there's a thirst and a huge market for this kind of stories. I as a writer, I'm taking notice.
A huge market in what kind of stories? Biopics, or musicians?
BOTH.
