This above all: to thine own self be true

Hi, so yes, again, I'm supposed to be writing! I'm taking a break and it was this or pintrest and there is not coming back from that. So here's my question - how do you define your writing genre? Very few of us, I think, just write one thing. I know most of my scripts can fall into many categories. Drama is a very broad base, as is comedy and action/adventure. I did a seminar recently and the host talked a lot about finding your genre and becoming an expert in it. While what he said did make total sense, it also seems a bit limiting. So how do you define yourself as a writer, while still maintaining your creativity with other types of stories. For me, my genre of expertise is historical drama with strong female characters - and I enjoy writing that. But I also write teleplays and shorts which tend to be more light hearted and have more comedy elements. I have yet to branch into horror, though I do enjoy writing action/adventure/thriller. (Yes, I do realize in screenwriting there are very few hard and fast rules - more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules. :o)
