Final Draft 9 does just that -- a live script read. You can assign different voices to each of your characters -- male, female, young or old. It also works great on a Mac.
Movie Magic does just that. It, too, has different age ranges and voice types. Of course the issue is acting. A computer voice cannot read the script and make acting choices. I love doing a table read to hear how actors interpret the characters. And only humans can do that.
Very true, Alan, a table read with actual people would be the best option. However, an option that is much harder to come by. It's nice to have "voice talent" right at your finger tips. :)
Thanks for the fantastic comments. The post was actually a joke and I'm very pleasantly surprised at the options available. A table read with real actors would be great, but I'm in rural Australia and would be limited to my wife, 2 kids and the neighbour's cattle dog.
Hi Tony, what a great discussion you prompted! :-) I think the Skype suggestion would be great for your rural situation, though if you used Google Hangouts you get to have more people on camera than group calls on Skype. I love doing cold reads (much of childhood with nose stuck in a book!) and would be happy to help out as one of your actors, schedule permitting. I'm in the UK so early mornings/evenings probably the best times for me.
