Screenwriting : What should I do now? by James Smith

What should I do now?

I've just completed my first ever draft for a screenplay, and I've sent it off to several people to see their thoughts and now I'm just waiting for their feedback. I'm just wondering, what should I do in the meantime to improve my screenplay. Thanks!

Dianne Politud

Congratulations on your script! Put your script aside maybe 8-10 days then read it again. Maybe work on a pitch, and cover letter. Good luck on your future endeavors. :)

Claude Gagne

Just one draft!

Ian White

re-write it

Raymond Zachariasse

Specs? So that means more screenplays. Never stop writing. I think the comment of Dianne is the most valid one. You do need to put your screenplay aside to see what you did wrong or right. I usually started with something new after this phase.

I usually do up to 7 Re-Writes to get it all right and usually it gets better with each Re-Write.

Congratulations on that accomplishment. Now put the draft in a drawer, pop a beer, put your feet up on the desk and relax. When the feedback comes in - it'll likely be pretty harsh since this is a first draft - read it, extract any positive comments and start the rewriting process. All the best.

James. Did you send it to someone that has quite a bit of experience. If not find someone with experience that has the time to read it and telly you what you are doing wrong. Almost all screenwriters start out making the same mistakes so and they will continue making them until someone with experience tells them.
