Writer's Block? Max Landis's advice

Max Landis (American Ultra, Victor Frankenstein), a prolific Hollywood screenwriter with more that 25 scripts sold, shares his advice on overcoming a writer's block by reversing a premise of an established narrative. Has anyone ever tried that? Did it work for you? https://youtu.be/Jm4mt5eycsc

Josiah Olson

Some very interesting advice! I'll have to give it a try!

Jody Ellis

He's not always well liked but the dude is a genius writer and smart as hell.

Dan MaxXx

Smart at self promoting. One of the few hollywood writers who uses social media. Doesnt hurt to have your dad s name and Steven spielberg as your godfather

Jody Ellis

@dan that's true but nothing wrong with using the resources one has at hand. There are plenty of no-talent, do-nothing Hollywood kids out there. He has written a ton of scripts at a young age and obviously an intelligent guy, those are things dads money can't buy. Now the connections? Well of course. But who wouldn't use those connections if they had them available???

David Clarke Lambertson

For me, writer's block is not about having an idea or not. It's the execution of that idea. It's the circular logic that you sometimes find in your stories. It's the I'm sick of this one, etc.

I wanted to hear what you guys think about his advice, not about the actual guy. But I guess his personality is too polarizing to ignore and just concentrate on what he says. If you want let's have a separate discussion on the topic of "Max Landis: an annoying Hollywood hack or not?"

Vladislav Nikitin

Josiah, let us know who it goes!!

Jody Ellis

I did comment about his advice. I said he was smart as hell. I don't get the concept of running out of ideas either, but I like what he had to say.

Vladislav Nikitin

Hey, Jody, you did, the only one. My previous comment was directed to others

Vladislav Nikitin

Unfortunately, it always happens that whenever I share something of this guy, instead of talking about what he has to say people ignore that and jump onto talking about his persona...

Jody Ellis

He has a big personality for sure. But like I said, Hollywood connections aside, he is obviously a highly intelligent person and isn't a slouch when it comes to writing. I thought American Ultra was awesome.

Have you seen Me Him Her or Mr Right?

Jody Ellis

Not yet!
