“Call it FAST, call it AVOD, call it whatever you want. Free ad-supported streaming is having a moment, and it’s only going to get bigger from here.”
And so the article begins. App based services like Pluto are upped big time and set in opposition to the big streamers like Netflix, HBO Max and Disney Plus. And when you read that over the last 6 months 44% of subscribers have left one of these global entities, then they may have a point.
But the one thing, maybe two, that is missing from this article, not by way of omission but an absence of evidence, is that they don’t really commission new content. There is only one FAST service mentioned that has commissioned a programme!
How will this transform the market for content producers? Will the Ads-based services have to start commissioning their own content?
Either way, as free services predominate, the market will still need new content. Perhaps there will not be that shift to commissioning, but that these FAST services will just be feeder stations, for in the main they are subsidiaries of global media Corporations. For the subscriber of such services, it simply means you’ll have to wait longer for newly commissioned content.
