NM FILM WEEK AUGUST 19, 2015 This week’s program is brought to you by New Mexico Actors at NMActors.com. New Mexico Actors, Lighting the Highway to Hollywood. SCHOOL DAYS The school year has started for New Mexico, and many students are back to learning reading, writing and the craft of filmmaking. UNM VALENCIA FILM I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Laura Musselwhite, the Dean of Instruction and Chief Academic Officer at the University of New Mexico, Valencia Campus. Located in Valencia County, just south of Albuquerque, this campus has just begun offering a certificate program in Film Technology. This is a thirty semester-credit-hour certificate that will train students for below the line film production jobs in the film industry, such as production assistant and grip. Students will get experience in post-production editing and cinematography, with an introduction to commercial, TV, and film production. Valencia Campus hopes to place graduates in productions throughout New Mexico. For more information on the program and its graduates, contact Susan Jackson or Justin Romine. OUT OF THIS WORLD Elizabeth Gabel of EG casting will be casting extras for "Out Of This World," a science fiction feature starring Gary Oldman. Production starts in mid-September in the Albuquerque area. The feature will call for all ethnicities, especially between the ages of 18 and 45. To apply for work as a background performer on this film, please make sure that your profile is updated or register at egcasting.com SCI-FI 48 Speaking of Science Fiction, Liz Langston and Austin Madrid of the Albuquerque 48 Hour Film Project have announced a new competition featuring Sci-Fi short films to be created on the weekend of October 16 through the 18, 2015. The winning film will screen at Filmapalooza in 2016. Early Bird registration is $150 if your team is registered by Monday, September 21. Teams who took part in the recent 48 Hour Film Project summer competition receive an additional $25 discount. There will be a Meet & Greet coming up on September 1st so you can gather team members and network. They are also planning a sci-fi special effects workshop, especially for writers and directors, where editors will explain what can be done realistically in 48 hours by taking advantage of faster special effects. Go to their website today for more information and to register your team. NMMA & AFME = MUSIC + FILM This past weekend, I attended a Musician & Filmmaker Mixer hosted by Jose Antonio Ponce of The New Mexico Music Awards & Ivan Wiener of the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience. Sponsored by listen!ABQ and Albuquerque Rock & Brews, this networking event was designed to give details of the "Life in New Mexico" media project sponsored by the New Mexico Film Foundation, as well as a series of upcoming workshops and mixers to help New Mexico filmmakers locate and acquire music created by local artists for their films. The workshops will teach filmmakers and musicians the process of licensing, copyrighting, and pitching. I had the opportunity to speak with many of the filmmakers, musicians and producers there and hear about their projects, including music videos, while some of the artist attendees played guitar and sang for us. Be sure to look for future mixers and workshops and get involved and educated about New Mexico film and music and how they can work together exponentially. LATINO FILM FESTIVAL The Third annual ¡CineMagnífico! Latino Film Festival of Albuquerque, will take place on September 18th, 19th and 20th, with multiple films showing at the Bank of America Theater at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. As part of ¡CineMagnífico! there will be a screening of short films on Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 pm at the Guild Cinema, including the romantic comedy Low/Fi, a film created by Alejandro Montoya, starring Kristen Rakes, Jocelyn Montoya, Alex Knight, Jodi Lynn Thomas, Matt Page and Rebekah Wiggins. The short film series will be followed by an after party at Imbibe featuring drink specials and great music. Keep an eye on the Latino Film Festival Facebook page and website for more information regarding directors, actors, film reviews, international awards, and what to look forward to in this year’s lineup. NMWIF MENTOR MANIA Don’t forget the New Mexico Women in Film Mentor Mania is coming up on Saturday, August 29 from 3 to 6 pm at the Sol Acting Academy.
