11th Annual Focus on Female Directors

This prestigious annual shorts program celebrates the directorial work of Academy Award winners, cinema pioneers, industry heavyweights, animators, music video directors, documentarians and the brightest stars emerging from film schools and the international festival circuit. Films include:

  • Lulu Wang’s “Touch” (2015, USA, 15 min.). An old man’s cultural misunderstanding leads to serious repercussions.
  • Kelly Sears’ “Pattern for Survival” (2015, USA, 7 min.). A key ingredient in any survival situation is the mental attitude of the individuals involved. Trailer
  • Jessica Poon’s “Oh! Stargazer” (2013, USA, 6 min.). A mixed-media music video brings the zodiac to life in a noirish city not unlike our own.
  • Catherine Hollander’s “The Great Perfection” (2015, USA, 25 min.). A contemplative L.A.-set comedy about stressed-out office workers in the meditation retreat business.
  • L.A. Premiere! Anna Musso’s “Run Fast” (2014, USA, 22 min.). Robert Forster stars as a trainer to a Kenyan runner in the L.A. Marathon.
  • 35mm! Lisze Bechtold’s “Moon Breath Beat” (1980, USA, 5 min.). A hand-drawn experimental film which was screened at major animation festivals and added to the National Film Registry in 2014.
  • Kitty Green’s “The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul” (2015, Ukraine/Australia, 7 min.). Adorned in pink sequins, little girls from war-torn Ukraine audition to play the role of Olympic champion figure skater Oksana Baiul.
  • Alyce Tzue’s “Soar” (2014, USA, 6 min.). In this delightful animated Student Academy Award winning short, a young girl helps a tiny pilot with a few problems. Trailer | Facebook

Discussion after the screening with filmmakers Lulu Wang (“Touch”), Catherine Hollander (“The Great Perfection”), Anna Musso (“Run Fast”) and Lisze Bechtold (“Moon Breath Beat”). There will be a drawing for a director’s empowerment bag and a reception in the lobby following for all ticket holders. Series compiled by Andrew P. Crane, Kim Adelman and Andrea Richards.

About the group

Seeking Our Story screens historic films directed by women. Each month we highlight a different director in our Los Angeles based film club. Sign up for our event mailing list by emailing seekingourstory@gmail.com! We recently joined the Rack Focus initiative at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood and now present screenings through their historic Egyptian Theatre and the Santa Monica Aero theater. Ticket sales benefit the Cinematheque which is a 501c3 non-profit.

We partner with Women In Media for networking before each screening. Meet people looking for crew, let people know you're available, or tell folks about your projects. All are welcome. Contact seekingourstory@gmail.com with questions.
