Writing a synopsis

Hi- new to 32. Can anyone advise... how long should a synopsis be? how detailed? Should i include breif character breakdowns ? i have written 2-page pitches for my screenplays- are those basically the same as a synopsis? thanks for the help. P

Google the words Film Synopsis and you'll get a million different opinions about how they should be done. The correct answer, as far as I'm concerned, is that it depends on who is reading the synopsis. Some agents will post on their website what they prefer. Some don't post anything. Every script writing "coach" will give you a different answer. To my way of thinking, the shortest you can make it and still hook in whoever is reading it. Ever hear of the "Elevator Pitch"? If you found yourself in an elevator with Steven Spielberg, or anyone who could make your career. You have until the door opens again to hook them with your pitch - about 10 seconds. On the other hand, if an agent, producer, or anyone else asks to read your script, it might indicate that they'll take more than 10 seconds. In that case, make it as short as possible while hitting all the main points.
