Filmmaking / Directing : Good Aussie films? by Phil Parker

Good Aussie films?

Most Aussies hate Aussie films, sometimes for good reason, but I feel like there have been some good ones in the last 12 months. Have you seen a good one you can recommend? I've heard Badabook was pretty good if you like horror...?

What are the ones you liked?

Darren A. Furniss

Son of a Gun

The Water Diviner was pretty good. Very popular here.

Amanda Toney

I actually loved The Sapphires

Conrad Kriel

Muriel's Wedding, Chopper, Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Square, Animal Kingdom, The Rover to name a few are all great Aussie films. The quality and amount that is produce in a year by the Aussie is a lot better than it is in South Africa.

I think all aspects of cinema should be celebrated, because it is a miracle that anything ever gets finished. Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! appealed to my dark humor and continuing search for the world's weird and wonderful cinema. To me, many of the films it classifies as trashy contain nuggets of gold.

Some nice films. Not one of them in the last 12 months as Phillip asked...

From this year . . . Son of a Gun was great, Paper Planes (by Robert Connelly) and Predestination were both awesome. Haven't seen Water Diviner yet but (for me) the best of the lot was William Kelly's War, but I am a bit biased on that one - https://vimeo.com/106268719. @Phillip Parker - great topic thank you but I don't agree that "Most Aussies hate Aussie films" - TV and download figures suggest they do. I agree that they don't watch them in cinemas but I don't think that's because they hate them.
