Budgeting music and sound during Pre-Production?

I'd like to know how many of the new producers out here plan for the music score and sound (sound design, sound editing, adr, sound mix, etc) on their budget? Most of the first films I did when I was starting out as a composer spent a large amount of their budget (if not all) during production, many times went over budget, thinking it would be the most beneficial for the film. In my opinion, and you might think it's a bit biased since I'm a composer for films, but I truly believe good or bad sound and music can really destroy an amazing film, making it sound completely unprofessional no matter how expensive the equipment used was. I'm not sure if film schools are to be blamed for not creating enough awareness on the importance of music and sound during post-production, or if it is just producers making this understandable but very avoidable mistake. What are your thoughts Stage32 community?

I totally agree with you. The funny thing is that whenever a producer approaches me always mention how important is to him the sound and the music of his film. But when it comes to the post production...

I think S32 Mod Beth Fox Heisinger posted a similar question and received a great answers. Beth, do you have that thread?

Milo Coello

Wow, what a fantastic thread! Glad to see it's been discussed already so thoroughly, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting my previous thread regarding budget percentages for music composition, Regina! I was unaware of this thread, and your request. Great catch. :)
