Hey do you guys know any screenwriting books or websites that would be helpful? Or just any tips of your own? I'm trying to write a drama/comedy and I'm having trouble getting my story across. Thank you!
John Jarrell, Romeo Must Die, has a book out. And from what I've read, it's really awesome. You can also try Screenwriters Bible, and even general writing book not just about screenwriting, Jason Bell Conflict and Suspense.
In the Read A Good Book section there's a running list of screenwriting books (someone was kind enough to include mine). "Having trouble getting my story across" covers a lot of ground. What's the problem? Oh, and every screenplay is a drama at it's heart, so is this a comedy or something else? http://www.scriptsecrets.net/tips/tip76.htm
I've found The Creative Screenwriter by Zara Waldeback & Craig Batty extremely helpful when it comes to brainstorming ideas. If your story is flawed, your script will be too. Happy reading.
Trottier's Screenwriter's Bible is the one that has helped me the most...so far. That, and the constant stream of commentary on the S32 site postings. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on S32 and they typically share their expertise freely.
If you're writing a dramedy, be sure to set up both tones in your first few pages so you're setting up the context that this story will have both drama and comedy.

I swear by William Goldman's books. Excellent resources from a master, especially "Adventures in the screen trade" and "Which lie did I tell?"

If you're serious about crafting characters, you have to check out "inside story" by Dara Marks.
