Anything Goes : Check the candy this Halloween by Kenton Owen III

Check the candy this Halloween

Please guys, if you're going trick or treating this Halloween, please please PLEASE check the candy before you and/or your children eat it. We have a lot of sick people in this world who will put razors, nails and the like inside candy and cookies. Stay safe, please.

More children are killed or injured by cars while trick-or-treating than by razors, nails and the like inside candy and cookies. Less than 10 verified cases of a child killed or injured by anything placed inside candy or cookies have been verified over the last 50 years. Each one a terrible tragedy. This is a very strong urban myth. However, more than 100 children are killed or injured by cars while trick-or-treating each year. Not by sick people but by accident. Not as "sexy" a warning, is it? Warning of the "boogyman" (sick people) is much more exciting. Keep your children safe. Not from the boogyman but from accidents while excitedly running into streets wearing costumes that are dark and limit vision. You don't really have that many sick people in your neighborhood. But an unexpected dart into the street is a real danger.

Breaks my heart, Kenton. I am quite happy ours are all grown now! Still, good advice for any parent who will have kids out there door knocking. Regarding safety, we mailed the grandkids a box of glow-in-the-dark braclets for the ankles and arms! Silly Nana.
