I'm a screenwriter in New York. I want to direct my film also. Is it a good idea to take Acting classes?

I ask this because I am told it will hone my craft. If I have a better understanding of what it is to act I will have a better film. I was also thinking of looking at Backstage and going on auditions. Any feed back would help. Thank you.

@Steven Harris Anzelowitz, curious, where did you hear this, "I ask this because I am told it will hone my craft."? IMHO, being able to emote and deliver a believable performance and being able to recognizing one that isn't, aren't mutually inclusive skills. You might be better served by taking some film production classes. Maybe have a look on Mandy dot com and see what shorts are crewing up in NYC. Get on a shoot, help out, observe and ask questions.

As Phillip said, there are plenty of successful directors who have never acted before. It's less about understanding what acting is for actors, and more about understanding how to convey what your vision is to your actors and finding a way to draw that performance out of them. That's not to say you won't learn things from an acting class, nor that you won't meet potentially great actors there that you could cast in your projects. But ultimately, your job as a director is to communicate your vision effectively with the various departments who will execute it. If you have trouble communicating with actors, a class may help that.
