Screenwriting : Sitting on a script with no idea on what to do with it by Dylan Kalloo

Sitting on a script with no idea on what to do with it

I was working on the production of a short film but sadly it fell flat. I had no desire of trying to get the film made again and wanted to connect with other filmmakers who might be interested. I usually make the shorts I write so this is a first. How do you all go about finding filmmakers and pitching your ideas/work?

Doug Nelson

I feel your pain, Dylan. I have several short scripts ready to go - some have won awards, the others have all been finalists in script competitions. I've been trying for years to put together a crew capable of making films. I've been willing to put up the financing but I'm still unable to find (an I'm willing to train) young folk who are willing to work. I've gone thru at least five wannabe Directors in the past year alone. I can only conclude that young people today want to go directly to retirement.

Try posting the script on Inktip and SimplyScripts (and here of course), they list short scripts for free.

Doug Nelson

Anthony - I tried InkTip: I've had one short produced (I gave it away for free) and I was swamped with messages from film students wanting free scripts. The Stage 32 loglines section is busted (has been for some time). I can't upload scripts and the one I had there has disappeared. I'd like to use it to teach new screenwriters but (sadly) not to be.

Hey Dylan, what is the genre of your short film and what is the production budget? I am open to producing a short movie script if I like it and if I can afford it.

Anthony Cawood

Dylan - Of course I forgot to include Script Revolution (sorry CJ!)... a fantastic free resource for getting your script visibility.

Doug - didn't realises you can't add scripts on here at the moment, but glad you had some success with Inktip, not everyone realises that it's free to list short scripts on there.

Out of the 40+ short options/sales I've had the majority were SimplyScripts related, then Inktip, then here and then reddit... I try and make sure my shorts are listed in as many places as possible, you never know where someone will be looking.

My recent feature option actualy came from someone finding my website (via Google) and requesting to read a couple of features, they optioned one a week later. So your own website may be worth investing in.

Ed Blount

I am looking for a script. I want to film in va.

Byron Griffin

Ed Blount, what genre are you looking for, I l have a script ready, live in NC

Byron Griffin

Nvm Ed, I don't write horror but best of luck to you!

Try the ISA - International Screenwriter's Association. You can also troll through the lounge discussion group for producers/directors here on Stage32...when you find someone who's bio fits your story, just 'add' them and tell them what you've got.

Ed Blount

It doesn't have to be horror. I'll buy anything that's good especially if I can film it in va

Patrick Freeman

Ed, what budget are you working with?

Ed Blount

I haven't set a budget yet . Depends on the script. I want to start micro budget and see what quality I can end up with before I open the wallet too wide. If I can shoot and prove I can make it great then I can handle a larger budget I m thinking about a short or a sizzle reel to test the quality. I would like to get a script and be ready to shoot by sept.

Got any old ships in Virginia? Like an old Navy ship that's currently a museum? I have a found footage paranormal script that I wrote with the USS Hornet in mind. But it could be adapted for any old ship, or building for that matter. Like a mental hospital or something. Because it's found footage it works best shot on hand held video and with unknown actors.

Doug Nelson

Ed, what sort of script are you looking for? I have a couple of award winning short scripts that I'll offer for free if I'm convinced that you have the stuff to follow through. One has only three characters, one location (INT./EXT.), no FX with only a small amount of Foley. The run time should be between eight and ten minutes (max # of showings at festivals.) It's a good script to use developing your Directing skills and overall filmmaking prowess. It's available now. Shoot it this spring/summer. Contact me if you're interested. Thanx, Doug

Ed Blount

Doug, I am looking for anything that could be shot in my location lake Anna va. I am really excited to shoot a horror but a good script is a good script.

Doug Nelson

Ed, you're not being very specific here. It looks like you've done some promotional stuff for your local visitor center but not much else. The little script I'm willing to give you is specifically designed for you to "show your stuff" as a new/emerging Filmmaker/Director. You want it/you don't want it.

Ed Blount

Where can I read the script ? I apologize if it's obvious but I am new to this site.

Anthony Cawood

Ed - Stage32 also has a Jobs section, you can post an Ad in their detailing exactly what sort of script you want.

Doug Nelson

Ed, PM me with your e-mail & I'll send a pdf of the script, the logline and the basic character bios. I'm not going to line the script, I'm not going to give you a story board or a shot list. I idea is to see how good you are and give you something for you to use marketing your filmmaking. I'll make this offer to every other new filmmaker out there.

Ed Blount

Doug my email is ed@lakehousebuilding.com

Doug Nelson

Ed, I sent it out a moment ago - the reason I asked yo to PM me your e-mail was so that it's not made public.

Ed Blount

I couldn't figure out how to pm and my tech assistant wasn't around . Thanks. Doug I will read tomorrow

Doug Nelson

I know what you're saying - my tech guru is my granddaughter.
