Screenwriting : Transitions by John Serafinko

Transitions

I've heard that FADE IN should be on the left but the programs I use (Trelby, Celtx) have a default that places them on the right. Is this a big deal that might get my work rejected before it's read? On programs with this default could I just correct the issue by manually moving the FADE IN or by using a different transition (action for instance)? All help is appreciated.

Ally Shina

It most certainly won't get your work rejected... relax.

Chad Stroman

Ally is right above. Also it's up to how you prefer. If you want it on the right, just delete the FADE IN: transition on the right and then insert an action and just make it FADE IN: so it shows on the left.

Some don't even use FADE IN:

Doug Nelson

John - relax. Putting FADE IN on the left, right or even in the middle has ABSOLUTELY no impact on your script's readability. Each writer develops a self comfortable style. Personally I left justify the FADE IN (followed by a comma to indicate there's more to come.) I end with a right justified FADE OUT followed by a period (to indicate a full stop.) That's just my personal style - it's not right or wrong. You will develop your own style.

No one's going to care where it's placed.

I put it on the left side but it doesn't matter. In fact a lot of people don't even bother using FADE IN: anymore. After they get to the end of my script they tell me where I should stick it.

John Serafinko

Thanks for all of your input. I really appreciate it.

Awesome! Just get the script done! Much Love
