Don Diego

Nice reel. Now you need to make that break with your first feature film. How is that thing going? Bringing it to AFM?

Aaron Falvey

Don Diego Thanks. I have 2 features written. I acquired the services of an experienced writer who's written over 20 features, some of which have been optioned and even won some prestigious awards. Main reason was because I already had 2 concepts I wanted to turn into features but don't have the skills to do the job. We've targeted one of the scripts to get funding and I have found a private investor who's willing to fund the feature as a micro-budget feature for 2019. We've just attached a producer to that film from Australia and we are now in the process of an 11th rewrite to change a couple things and will then employ a writer to look over our script and critique it for us. So that's where that thing is going. Got a couple distributors interested in seeing the finished film too. As for AFM, I simply can't afford to fly over for it, its a little far from New Zealand and I have 4 young children I have to support. Feel free to send me a network request and keen in touch.

Aaron Falvey

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments. I hope I can network with a few talented filmmakers!

Don Diego

Very smart move to do ULB first. It shows that you know how to play and have a business sense.

Aaron Falvey

Don Diego I believe as filmmakers we need to our investors and studios a level a confidence which leaves them feeling safe about a larger investment. I am sure I will learn a lot from doing my own feature too.

Don Diego

Money would come but unfortunately first steps you have to do usually alone (there are exceptions of course) with your own resources. Investors wanna see and hear success stories with ROIs and only then willing to take that boat trip with you. That is what I see is happening in that very challenging part of entertainment.

Don Diego

A good producer comes with a price. It’s always upfront on ULB and low budget movies. Deferred payment is not an option. Producers have to pay bills too. And a pay for guns for hire has to be substantial for their time and a value of contacts. On 200K movie his pay will be 20k. That is not a very attractive pay for a good producer that would take the project through all stages from the development to distribution and money collection. Good producer will not be very motivated to raise even that amount of funds for a first time writer/director. It’s too much risk to guess what to expect on a delivery date. But for higher budget projects, staring 1 or 2 mill, where it starts to be interesting financially for a good producer, to get involved that type of writer/director, is mission impossible, he is not going to be qualified with investors, despite all his wins for shorts even at Sundance or at Oskar. This is math and reality. That is why I said before, that a first project probably Aaron should do alone and prove himself first. Deliver a commercial film to the market which would sell to buyers and platforms internationally and domestically and achieve strong ROI. And on top first time filmmakers always wanna do it themselves anyway, they are thinking they are going to save money that way. 90 percent of them run out money before they go into post. Go to AFM in November and you see them walking down the halls with unfinished films and asking sharks for money (SA and distributors) That way they will never see any ROI and might even lose the rights to that film too. What team a good producer brings in matters too! Lots of facts and info, folks to consider before opening a nice bottle of champagne to celebrate. Hope it’s clarifies some options here for some.

Saeed Javaheri

Hello

I agree with your opinion

Thank you

Aaron Falvey

Hey Katya Stiletti that is completely fine. I am well aware my work will not appeal to everyone which is why I wanted to share my reel with everyone beforehand to help people make that decision. I wish you all the very best with your film-making endeavors :)

Aaron Falvey

Willem Lodewijk Elzenga You need to prove your value. In order to do that you are going to have to invest some of your own money into your own business. Its like that with every business. I am certainly not saying get a loan and make a feature, but you could do that. But you should at least have a dozen shorts under your belt. I have done about 13 shorts and most of them have been self funded, but I have not spent much of them at all, only a few hundred for film. 3 of my last 4 films have been funded by various avenues though. I think once you prove your competence as a filmmaker and prove you can get results, people will invest in you. At least that's how its worked out for me.

Aaron Falvey

Alan M. Cossettini lets have a chat some time and find out how we can help each other out! I always love collaborating with people!

Thomas Shaner

Good to meet you!

Alan M. Cossettini

Aaron Falvey sure! Whenever you want!

Shanghai Jack Neal

Wonderful - I've got a few things we can talk about that will be FUTURE TECH ... We will talk very soon... Thank you

Aaron Falvey

Shanghai Jack Neal that sounds really cool. Please message me when you have time to discuss it.

Aaron Falvey

Eric Shropshire thanks for the message. At this stage I have no need to borrow any money for films. :)

Bob Eckhard

Hi Aaron, Not NZ based but writer from UK who's started to direc/produce. Actually, I lived in Palmy back in 81 and returned several times since with a visit to Blenheim on route to Taupo. Love your showreel and would love to collaborate if you're interested? Bob

Aaron Falvey

Willem Lodewijk Elzenga I'd love to hear your strategies about what alternatives you have to making your own content and using your own funds to prove your value. I've sent you a friend request so please feel free to message me if you wish. I'd love to see some of your work as well if you have something for me to view?

Aaron Falvey

Bob Eckhard awesome. Glad to know someone has been through my home town from abroad. I'd love to collaborate with you somehow Bob. Please let me know your skill set so I can give this some thought. :)

Bob Eckhard

Hi Aaron, sorry for the delay. I don't think I saw this comment first time round - only that you had networked with me . That said, I might have seen it and forgotten as I've been mad busy with my stage play which I'm getting ready (re-editing, production and directing as a west london theatre) for a 2 week run in January. In response to your question - and allowing for the distance between us - I would probably be of best use to you in remote aspects of filmaking such as writer, editing or providing a polish to whatever script you use as unlikely to be able to attend in person - unless its a premiere!. My thoughts when viewing your reel is you should make a feature - which is really only 6 x15 min shorts stapled together. If you'd be interested, PM me direct on here (if it still exists as i can't find it on new interface?) or we could email or skype. Cheers, Bob

Irv Johnson

Really love the look of your films. Great pictures!

Aaron Falvey

Bob Eckhard thanks for the message and no need to apologise, us filmmakers all lead very busy lives! I will get in touch when I can.

Aaron Falvey

Irv Johnson really appreciate the feedback and thank you for connecting me with :)

Sai Natarajan

Nice reel Aaron! Looks like you've been keeping busy... wish I could say the same :P

Aaron Falvey

Sai Natarajan Thanks so much Sai. I am sure you have been making stuff which means something to you. At the end of the day that is all that matters :)

Richard Kole
