Online Screenwriting Courses

Hi All. I'd like to take on an online course to learn a bit more. It has to be online as I travel for work so cant commit to school. Are there any that are better than others? Are there any that are recognized qualifications? Or are they all much of a muchness?

Myers and Screenwriting U are the two famous brands. Supposedly, Roadmaps does a by-invite only writer’s program. Stage 32 has a virtual writer’s room for $40 a month. Try them all.

I think UCLA's online offerings are considered pretty good.

Hi Anthony, Stage 32 is an education platform and we have a ton of really great online courses here. If you're looking for an intro to screenwriting intensive course, I have a 4 part breakdown taught by a literary manager: https://www.stage32.com/classes/Perfecting-the-Basics-of-Screenwriting. Or, if you are looking for something specific, you can check out any of our screenwriting webinars here: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/tag/screenwriting

Hey Anthony Lucas! I run Stage 32's Writers' Room and think that's a great resource for learning, but it all depends on your level.

If you are just looking to get started, I usually recommend checking out an intro course (like "Perfecting the Basics of Screenwriting" - https://www.stage32.com/classes/Perfecting-the-Basics-of-Screenwriting) or book ("Screenplay: Writing the Picture" is a great starting point on the craft and "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit" is a great start on the business) instead to get the basics of the craft down.

Once you have the basics down, then it's all about hearing from and getting feedback from people who've already done it or work in the craft every day. The Writers Room is great because it keeps you writing and improving with new educational and inspirational webcasts each week focused on all aspects of the craft: business, pitching, writing, networking, etc. It also gives you instant access to all of the previous webcasts and an exclusive screenwriting class.

If you'd rather get some writing under your belt first, then coverage and consulting directly with execs is SUPER helpful. That's something we do on stage 32, but you can also do this by building relationships in the industry with people you can ask for help from.

Feel free to shoot us an email at writerhelp@stage32.com if you have any questions about any of this!

I have to say, Andrew Louis Marnik, I think that is a great one, as well as David Mamet, on the same site. Also great.

Hell, even watch Ron Howard's on Directing. And Helen Mirren's on Acting. All of those perspectives are crucial to your craft.
