I don't think it killed anything. Cowardice is killing the industry. In the 1980s, distributors took risks, just like they did in the 1910s and 1940s. In the 1990s, they were a different kind of risks. In the 1950s, 1970s, all kinds of new, original films. Now, what? Sequels and adaptations. Might as well watch superman on TV if you're going to see a "franchise."

But, as far as technology goes, Facebook and Twitter are much more damaging than Netflix. They are what gets you disconnected from the outside world. Netflix is basically another tv channel, like another HBO.

WLE- Good point about all the good title 2nd hand DVD's that are available. FYI- NETFLIX just secured a massive new production facility in New Mexico. So with 130 million subscribers and growing and and increasing amount of "A" list talent it seems they are in it to win it. I really don't have an opinion. Someone wants to pay me to write big screen or little screen I'm ready.

Vasco- Thank you sharing an historical perspective on the changing tides in cimema. That is the business. If it doesn't change nothing innovative or exciting happens.

I heard a rumor that Netflix original content is not chasing tax incentives and disappearing to foreign lands for cost saving purposes. They are keeping production stateside specifically so that the talent and crews can be closer to their families. Happier players make for better entertainment. Sounds like a total rumor though. I hope it's a real philosophy that's gaining traction. Perhaps these new studios are part of that.

The happiness of the actors and crews was always the last thing on the minds of studio executives in Hollywood. So, that's a definite industry change if Netflix is indeed bringing production stateside for those reasons.

M.L. They are also expanding production facilities in Europe as well they recently acquired a massive production facility. So they are operating just like any other major studio. And as far as "I heard a rumor" It is difficult for me to respond to that. I do my best to read the trades everyday such as THR daily edition which comes to my gmail inbox (free) Because as "RB" says this is still show BUSINESS. You have to keep up with who is doing what with where and when and how it is being done. And that requires work not RUMORS.

Remember, Netflix is a global company. If they want to feed the global marketplace, well, the USA is only a small piece of the pie. If they want to sell to the rest of the world, they need to make films in the rest of the world.

Love it... I always hear direction from directors / actors / producers & I film more in a month than 10 different independent directors do in 3 to 5 years... They will never see the "IT" like I do because of what it takes to get there in your head about the layers of "ID"... Love Kelly's Hero's... Leap of Faith is what I've always strived for.... When met with resistance - Now knowing I'm on the right path because of all the gains I've made - Now that I actually want to start producing films... My Goal 1 90 Min Film per month every month & make them HUGE in the planets they belong on...

When I was taking Marketing courses at McMaster Univ. we studied the irony of Blockbuster CEO John Antico passing an offer from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in 2000. Ten years later, Blockbuster was declaring bankruptcy and Netflix was listed as a $28 Billion dollar asset company worldwide. Now the question is; "who will be the next Netflix" in this ever changing landscaping. As far as the impact on traditional movie theatres and how customers attend them, the reverse question applies. What makes people pay to watch a movie on theatres instead of streaming? If the expectation of an outstanding good movie is delivered to the audience people will keep attending theatres. Is there movies developed by Netflix (Apple, Amazon) that should have been in theatres first? How sustainable is for producers to develop movies only for streaming services? On the other hand how tradicional Studios are taking new projects? At the end is supply vs demand.

Brainstorm the movie with Christopher Walken & Natalie Wood - This is the future of filming... The human or animal mind to your mind... The corporations want to make this a reality so that we can all wear it like cell phones but inside the mind... Think your phone calls & see your family & people through their eyes... VR Living will happen one day & so will VR CRIMES!!!
