Documenting India’s Unreported Rape Cases, No Nation For Women

Priyanka Dubey, an award-winning journalist, spent six years researching and documenting India’s unreported rape cases for her new book, “No Nation For Women – Reporting On Rape From India, The World’s Largest Democracy”. Released in India in December, the book is out in the UK and US as well, from 8 March, International Women’s Day. It includes eye-opening, investigative reportage from India’s hinterland, where national media, especially English language platforms, rarely set foot.

I know that this is an 'anything goes' forum but it is a subset of Stage 32 which is basically film related. The issues you raise certainly significant, but I just don't really see them as a 'good' fit in here. That's just my personal pov.

JD Hartman

This post and your political posts have no place here.

Aditya Basu

Yeah I am wondering how come people make films without being abreast with current affairs and issues?! And the reason why its called anything goes as anything goes. This is an open forum anyways. Film making is a form of activism and we can't always float in a fantasy world. And to practice activism one surely has to speak of the issues be it through films or posts. What matters more over the art is the story we tell. So issues are important.

You guys done stroking each other?

Martina Cook

What’s the problem with this post? I’ve seen far worse and more unrelated-to-movies issues than this one. I find the article interesting as this matter has been covered very often by the BBC in the UK, and I’m sure there are filmmakers in India who would love to cover this issue but are stopped by politics. If you don’t like a post just scroll down and move on.

Doug Nelson

Martina, I too have seen far worse, but I'd appreciate this forum more so if I didn't have to wade through all this political crap.

Martina Cook

Doug, could you please explain to me why do you think rape is a political issue? Not trying to be confrontational or anything, I just don’t understand why this reaction to an issue that, to me, seem legit to share...

Christian Pius

To become dismissive on issues regarding rape or physical abuse is the easiest thing, frankly the laziest thing for human beings to do.

Doug Nelson

Martina, where did you read that I espoused that rape is a political issue? I don't seem to be able to find that.

Patricia Poulos

I object to this as I did the #Metoo! threads.

If you are all serious, go deeper. These climates are introduced and nurtured by politicians and persons of self-interest. If you don't, on your own, have the courage to stand up against these people, you are as gutless as those to whom you refer.

Martina Cook

Patricia Poulos who are you referring to?

Doug Nelson

I see these forums aas places for networking and to me, networking is the fine art/craft of making friends and influencing others for mutual benefit. Most seem to get that; a few don't/won't - sad. Over & out!

Why shouldn't a website that is designed for creative people from around the world have a forum that allows members to disseminate information and views about tragedies and injustices, or issues that might be political, religious, or social/class-related? Is that really considered too "inappropriate, offensive or insensitive" to some members?

I also agree with Martina. I don't believe that someone could call the subject matter of this topic - the release of a book that documents unreported rapes in India - "political crap." That's one callous, offensive and ignorant conclusion.

Many films, documentaries, television series and other media content are based on such information - on news articles or news reports, books, and on other content. If someone doesn't want to know something about a particular matter, then the solution for them should be easy: simply don't read it.

Thanks for the share, Aditya.

Martina Cook

Totally agree Bill...“The accused” - with a magnificent Jodie Foster. Just to mention one.

Christina Patjens

So true, Bill.

This particular forum is "Anything Goes". Describes the content. Anyone can post anything, short of spammers and their ilk. There are many people who drift into political comments in other forums where it is out of place and unwelcome, here it is not. There are many forums on S32 where more focused content is found. Those might be more to the liking of people who object to some sort of posting here.

Posters need to remember that the folks you might strongly disagree with here, are S32 members and as such they may choose not to share information and knowledge with a specific person in the future. Be thoughtful.
