Phone calls in plays

Hi All!

I've written multiple short plays and I am now trying to complete my first full-length play. In my play, I am trying to cover anxiety and depression from diagnosis to feeling better.

My protagonist is someone that has moved cities for a job so does not yet have a friend network. So I am currently working phone calls into the play. I'm not sure if they should be one-sided or if we can hear the other persons voice. Also writing them does not feel natural for the format.

Does anyone have any pointers?

Good luck with working out the phone call. If there's no other way for the character to say what he/she is saying on a telephone, then a phone call could work well. I guess the question I would ask myself is why this character's dialogue has to be heard over a phone call? If there's no other way, then the call format could be spot on.

I agree with @Kay one way telephone conversation on stage can work. Also good prop cos protagonist doesn’t even have to talk. Could circle or pace around phone, or continuously stare at it, conveying a desperate neurosis of loneliness. For anger emotion, could bash handset or throw it across the room. Also can play with lighting so phone is highlighted, centre stage, signifying its the most important thing on his mind.

It can work well depending on the conveyance of light and action.
