On Writing : Writing your first play! by Ellie Kitchener

Writing your first play!

How do you start with the layout of a play? I have written scripts before but nothing for a stage.

Are there any tips on writing for stage/theatre?

What was the first play you've written?

Any advice for a newbie?

There is not much difference. The formatting is slightly different, but the main thing is that you have to think containment. There cannot be many scene changes. It just interferes with the flow of action. There should be limited characters as most productions do not want the expense of too many characters. If you want some practice, I would suggest the Meetup Group "LA Play Readers".

I can send you a few pages of one of the screenplay's I wrote, so a visual representation can be seen in the essence of formatting. That one won 2nd place at the Canne's Screenplay Contest and also a 2 readers recommendation in another one.

First stage play I ever wrote was "I Wish...", which is the one mentioned above. You can also find another site here that is basically a theatre network: https://www.curtaincallonline.com/.

Stage play's seem to be a fun, lively atmosphere. Even if it is a darker tone. It is playful, almost silliness at times, that heightens the essence of what we can push through in our creativities.

Biggest thing I can say, is just embrace the fun in the writing. Read other stage play's, especially if you are going to add music for a musical within: https://www.allmusicals.com.

Enjoy the play writing and the element of creativity you bring through it.

Thank you for all you do.

God Bless.
