Screenwriting : What does this credit mean? How can you get it? by Victor Titimas

What does this credit mean? How can you get it?

I noticed in some movies a credit type saying it's based on characters created by someone(eg:"Based on characters created by"). Who receives it and how? How can you get it?

Craig D Griffiths

If you have characters that are protected by copyright, permission to use those characters can be given. Then this new story doesn’t belong to the character owners.

Sometimes it is also done out of respect. Bob Kane created Batman as a kid. He is an old man now. He probably sold those rights decades ago. But you still see “ based on characters created by Bob Kane.

William Martell

It's probably a sequel to another film.

Sam Borowski

So, let's say I strike a deal with MGM to write and direct an original James Bond movie. The screenplay would be written by Sam Borowski, Based on the characters created by Ian Fleming. Or, as I am ironically, working on another sequel to a character I did not create right now for the studio - that I can't legally write about here just yet - again it will be screenplay by Sam Borowski based on a story by another writer and characters created by Evan Landon (fake name - lol). The original writer gets the credit for "based on the characters created by ... " and you can only get the credit if you write a screenplay based on those characters and get the necessary permission to use them in the film. GOD BLESS and STAY FRESH! <3
