Knowledge is Power

Good night creatives. Hope everyone had a productive day.

I'd really appreciate your input on my inquiry. I'd like to get some books to up my knowledge not particularly in the area of screenwriting as an art, but screenwriting as a business. The back end, how the industry runs.

Are there any books you recommend to increase my knowledge business wise of the industry, or even just books you think would be of benefit on a whole to apply to the business?

Much appreciated in advance.

Cheers!

If you're talking American Film Industry, here are some:

An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood

Powerhouse: Inside CAA

Memoirs: Adventures of the Screen Trade, Hollywood Animal, Hello he lied.

Beth Fox Heisinger

And/or, perhaps, if you are also thinking about the business side of how to produce, here's a book that was recommended to me: Surviving Production; The Art of Production Management for Film and Television by Deborah S. Patz. It's a detailed book sharing the author's 12-year experience in office production management setting up and managing a production company including the prep, the shoot, and the wrap.

Christopher Phillips

A good primer: The Business of Film (American Film Market Presents) 1st Edition

by Paula Landry (Author), Stephen Greenwald (Author)

Craig D Griffiths

Listen to podcasts on business and marketing. Small Business Big Marketing is okay. Anything with Seth Godin.

These tend to be scenario based. They help listeners solve problems etc. You can pick and chose episodes and they are free.

Hi Imo,

Like Christopher Phillips said above, if I were to read only one book about the business of film, that book would be the one for me. And it's regularly updated, too.

I would also keep up on current events and read trade papers/websites like The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, IndieWire, and The Wrap.

Best fortunes in your creative (and film business) endeavors, Imo!

Ah! You all are amazing! Thank you for all of the great resources. I've got a lot of reading and internalizing to do. About to look into these recommendations. Much appreciated.
