Color Isolation in a black and white video

Hey everyone, hope this is the right lounge. I have been slowly teaching myself editing and effects. For my latest video I tried to learn how to isolate one color in a black and white video. I was successful with the red jacket. My question comes because my intention was to have different colors (yellow boots and blue hat) fade in one at a time, until all the clothes were colorized.  I could not figure out how to do it without the other colors fading out while the new color faded in. I use Sony Vegas Pro. Any tips for how to achieve this?

Hello

your solution is rotoscoping

but you will have to use another type of software for this, I use adobe after effects to create the masks, frame by frame, and I do it in several different layers, where I can control the colors, opacity of each layer, effects and everything else that I need.

You can use another type of software, but this is a technique that you can use for your result.

Thank you so much! Getting a different program may take a second but I will look up rotoscoping in the mean time. Appreciate your time!

Yeah! I started with color and then turned it black and white in post.

Hi Julie. I don't know Sony Vegas Pro. I heard it was a great editing program, not sure about the color. I'm a professional colorist, so let's try and work through this. I'm assuming what you've shot is in color. There's 2 approaches to this. You'll need to figure out how your software is configured and what it's capable of.

Approach 1 - Starts by removing all the color and bringing back each color, one at time.

Approach 2 - Starts by removing the colors you don't want and leaving the color you do.

All easier said than done. Part of the complexity here is isolating the colors. Many colors blend in with the colors next to them. It sounds like you've isolated Red, can you create separate isolations for other colors on different layers or nodes in Vegas? If so that might be your answer. If you're still having trouble with that in Vegas, do you know any other programs that might offer you the ability to color correct? Not sure this really gets to the meat of an answer for you.
