State of the Animation Industry During COVID-19. What did you think?

Mike Mitchell, Harland Williams, and Conrad Vernon were great in the discussion today! What did you all think? Any takeaways? What was most helpful? Anything surprise you?

Brannon Hollingsworth

It was an excellent webinar - funny, informative, most helpful, and encouraging! Thanks so much to all involved, but particularly Mike, Harland, and Conrad for taking time out of their schedules and participating. :)

Sandeep Sharma

This was a great webinar. Informative and inspiring!

Brannon Hollingsworth

Just to add onto the Resources discussion at the end of the webinar, here's another great resource: Write for Animation, by Jeffrey Scott - https://www.amazon.com/How-Write-Animation-Jeffrey-Scott-ebook/dp/B07MW8...

Steven Shea

It felt like hanging out with friends, which is really needed during this time. I've spent the entirety of the lockdown teaching myself animation, and developed a whole series with an artist friend, that we just started taking out to studios this week. You can't keep a good creative down!

Sandeep Sharma

I think here is the book that Harland mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Irene-Kassorla/dp/0708827500

I just ordered it!!

Sandeep Sharma

Brannon, nice to e-meet you! Just connected with you.

Sandeep Sharma

Steven, mind sharing how you went about teaching yourself animation - was it a particular software?

Congratulations and best wishes for your success!!!

Brannon Hollingsworth

Thanks for the link, Sandeep. Nice to e-meet you too - I'm new here, but I think I'll make it one of my new homes. :) I agree Steven! :)

Steven Shea

I started using Adobe Character Animator, which is free in the Adobe CC suite if you have it. They have a YouTube channel that offers a ton of Free tutorials on how to use the software. (https://www.youtube.com/user/okaysamurai) It's very user friendly, and their customer service with the animation is top notch. They answered all of my questions, and even helped with some of my rigs.

You can watch the pitch teaser I made for my series we are pitching here: https://vimeo.com/417661167

(That was made with a 3 person team, in 4 weeks. The animating itself for the entire thing took under 1 day. The hardest part was building out all of the assets, characters and sets)

Brannon Hollingsworth

Looking pretty funny, Steven Shea! I have a soft spot for monsters, actually... :)

Sandeep Sharma

Steven Shea thanks for sharing all that information!!

Watched it! Great synopsis as well.

Sandeep Sharma

Steven Shea you are right, it was like hanging out with friends. How great would it be to be in a room with them bouncing off ideas.

Amanda Toney

So great to see all of you on the webinar. Really cool to peel back the minds of some of these great animators like Conrad, Harland and Mike and see how they're handling the quarantine. Great resources that you guys are sharing on this thread, too!

Sandeep Sharma

One of my most favored animated films is Secret of Kells. Here is a great resource about it: https://characterdesignreferences.com/art-of-animation-1/art-of-the-secr...

Sandeep Sharma

Amanda Toney thanks again so much for continuing to organize such amazing webinars! I am going to re-watch it and hope some of Harland's FUNNY rubs off on me.

Karen "Kay" Ross

This was great, thank you Amanda Toney for keeping things moving! It really was like a conversation with friends, wasn't it Steven Shea ? Sandeep Sharma You read my mind! I was just thinking to add links for the resources LOL! So encouraging Brannon Hollingsworth I agree, and I particularly liked the continued message that things will return to "normal" so there's no reason to switch to animated if your project is not better served in that format. A GREAT reminder that you have to serve the story first!

Sandeep Sharma

Karen "Kay" Ross Here is another resource about the film of Mulan. (I love the coffee table book about it)

I think it was Mike who mentioned there is something about seeing the artwork on walls that is inspiring and wonderful to be around. I really resonated with that idea.
