Anna Henry's TV Pilot Writing Lab : Show Descriptions by Anna Marton Henry

Show Descriptions

I know some of you are struggling with writing a show description. Here is an idea that might help. Take one of your favorite shows that you've been watching. Doesn't matter if the show is anything like the one you're writing, just that it's something you enjoy. You've seen at least several episodes - you've got a good idea what the show is about now. I've never seen it, and you want to sell me on watching it too. I ask you what it's about - I want to get an idea of the show so I can tell if it's something I might like or not. How would you respond? Would you give me a summary of the pilot episode? Probably not. You'd tell me about the main characters, the central conflicts of the show, the world it's set in, maybe something about the visual style or at least the tone, maybe even some of the themes. You'd tell me if it's funny because of the witty dialogue, or if the aliens are super creepy. You'd tell me that it's sweet and I can watch it with my kids, or that it's edgy but reflects some important and uncomfortable truths about our world. You can even write this out for your favorite show.

Now do that same thing for your show.

Thanks, Anna. Very helpful. I'll definitely rework my submission, which, for some reason I misunderstood as the pilot synopsis. Ugh.
