Screenplay-ization of Books

Hi! Just curious. I thoroughly enjoy the shows "Killing Eve" and "You." Since I also enjoy reading, I searched Amazon and found the books and read them. Good thing? Bad thing? Just curious to see if others do the same.

John - Book adaptations can be a hit or miss kind of labor. It's helpful to go back to the source and analyze why the adaptation worked or it didn't. "Fight Club" and "Choke" hit it out of the park, in my opinion. However, my two female writer friends have some problems with "Little Fires Everywhere".

Hey John - I think it is purely personal taste. There are some books I have read that were later made into movies and it was a bad idea. Then, there are others that are wonderful. William Goldman is one of my favorite screenplay writers (Misery / Princess Bride - both books). I think Peter Jackson/Boyens/Walsh did a fantastic job with the Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbitt. I also think fans of the Harry Potter books are also fans of the movies.

There is some debate whether books will make good movies because they don't necessarily follow the formula and so somewhere along the way "they" try and make the script fit the mold - bad idea in my opinion.

If it were up to me making the film - I would say follow the book as closely as possible and let the chips fall where they like - fans of the book will appreciate it and those that aren't won't know the difference - but at least you were true to the book.

PS - I try not to make a habit of reading the book before or after - it usually just happens.
