Screenwriting : Editing by Christine J. Whitlock

Editing

I'm on the fourth draft of my spec Hallmark Christmas mystery script. How many edits do you do and what do you look for?

Craig D Griffiths

Story mostly. I constantly ask “why did they do that”?

Once I am on solid ground and everything makes sense I start polishing. I check each bit individually.

Peter Roach

I read though to 'see if it makes sense.' Do I have a credible plot. Edit

Then I look at the characters; remove minor characters. Create arcs in the major characters. Rewrite.

Last pass is dialogue; does it wring true? Does the dialogue reek of the character? Rewrite.

I am not near finished until version 5 of a screenplay.

Carl Crosby

One other step I do is to have it read out loud. either I read it and record it. Then listen to it. To see I understand and follow what I have written. I know it sounds funny but sometimes what I write is not always what I have imagined. So it is a check and balance for me. Then I rewrite it again. lol

PJ Edwards

I just go until I feel I finished it. I stopped counting the number of edits done in the last script i wrote, but I am pretty sure it was in the double digits.
