Finish the Thought: Auditions are like...

I'm sure I've shared this video before, but hearing William H. Macy say, "Auditioning sucks hippo dick. Everybody knows it and no one will say it." just made my day (for some odd reason). LOL!

Because I love transforming the auditioning process, mine would be "Auditions are like speed dates - you only have so much time, so don't aim to impress. Just own it. Be present and invite them along with you. The best you can be is fully present."

Hello everyone!

Steve James

Jeff Daniels - "You are the answer to their problem. Be nice, be professional...and solve their problem !" That's how I feel, though I never put it into words. Great video, Karen - thanks.

Matthew Cornwell

Auditions are like diet soda: missing all the stuff that I want, and trying to pretend like it’s the same thing. My beef is that many CDs are the reader as well, which is great when they are a former actor. Otherwise, you get a mediocre scene partner at best who is NOT committed to the imaginary circumstances, but instead is judging you in real time. That is the antithesis of what I need as an actor to do good work.

Melanie Scroggins

"If you are one in a million type, there are seven of you in Manhattan alone." So good! Thanks for sharing, Kay. As a voice actor, I can definitely relate to auditions being like speed dating. I heard recently 'audition until it's no longer special' and I've been trying to approach my craft in that way. It's a part of me - if I make it "special" I'll think too much about it.

I have never seen this until now! Love the comments by these fabulous Actors. I'm so sharing with my class mates. Thank you Karen.

Some auditions are like playing dress up for your parents or living a fairy tale. If we do the work during the preparation stage and then get into character, it will ease many of our anxieties and allow us to play relatable characters that will be transforming on and off screen.

@Karen I love your words “Don’t aim to impress, just own it.”

Brian Flanagan

Queen Victoria had two brilliant statesmen who held sway over the British Empire at the height of her dominion -- Gladstone and Disraeli.

Someone asked her whose company she preferred.

Her Majesty replied that, when with Gladstone, she felt as though she was talking to the most interesting person in the world.

With Disraeli, however, she felt as though she was the most interesting person in the world.

You know which one she had in her pocket.

Woody Allen echoes Jeff Daniels; he'd make himself watch bad stuff to learn what NOT to do.

Watched an interview with Stephen Sondheim years ago. A student asked him if he had any advice for young writers -- which also applies here, I think.

"Read Chekov," was one suggestion.

Chekov's best advice? "Pay attention."

I love that.

Thank you so much for sharing this! These are words every actor needs to hear.
