Hey everyone so my kids book will be coming out Sept 30 and I really want to start making this into a cartoon. Does anyone have any suggestions for animation software for someone who is just starting out?

Depends on how much you want to spend and what style you are going for. Blender is free and can do 3D or 2D but is a complicated piece of software. Adobe has a few choices such as Animate CC(Flash), After Effects, and Character Animator. - each with strengths and weaknesses.

Animation is a lot of work. Have you ever done any animation before? Seconds take weeks to create, minutes take months to create. You might want to think about getting a team to work with you. I remember working on a script I had with Flash a few years ago. Even a few seconds of animation took hundreds of movements for one scene.

Hey John, It was about $2000 - I found a studio through UpWork. There were 3 strong responses when I posted and I chose a studio that was in the middle. One studio quoted $20,000, another studio quoted $600. So, it can be all over the place :)

sigh. It depends on the quality you are looking for. Of course there many "stock" animation templates that are mostly used for hokey corporate vids. But if you are in the storytelling business and have no experience or latent talent to dive into the field of animation, there is no off the shelf software that will do the job for you. Professional animators have years of study and experience that starts with life drawing -- it is an art form that elevates story not a plug and play. Definitely immerse yourself in the industry if you are serious about tackling it yourself, or as others have suggested HIRE someone. I capitalize hire, because many artists are asked to do things on spec or for some sort of free deferral -- more so than any other creative endeavor. Again, depending on the quality you seek, top-of-line feature animation artists run on average at $5,000 a week.
