Screenwriting : How seriously to take yourself? by Geoff Wise

Geoff Wise

How seriously to take yourself?

On the surface, attempting to break in as a screenwriter seems ludicrous -- so many others with similar dreams, such an unpredictable mix of talent, determination, and luck triggers that rare success.

My not-so-serious view of the screenwriter's journey goes something like this 45-sec clip:

My question: Is it better to acknowledge the insanity -- to keep a balanced, self-aware perspective?

Or to shove that aside as a distraction from achieving your writing goals?

Doug Nelson

I'm retired so I no longer have to take anything/one seriously. It's very liberating in that I can reject your reality and substitute my own - it gives my creativity free rein. I understand the long hard struggle - having been there. Now I like helping, guiding others along the journey.

Craig D Griffiths

I just focus on creating better and better work. The work is what makes or breaks a career.

How many come backs do we have to see to acknowledge that bad work gets you sidelined, perhaps for decades.

I like elevator guy. “Hi I was where you are and I realised the only way to make money to is prey on people just like me”.

Bill Albert

You don't have to be crazy to do this, but it helps.

Kiril Maksimoski

Geoff, I take my self seriously as an non-professional writer (won't use the "A" word, some folks might have goosebumps).

I'm aware that only dime in a dozen even reach out to big time producers and even less linger in that world, but as much there are tons of writers out there, there are also all sorts of producers, film-makers who although don't have spotlight on them still produce decent movies...just enough for every writer who does not give up to take his chance.

Daniel Smith

I know the odds are against success but I found writing to be quite entertaining for myself alone.

Patrick Peter

I want to improve in my style of writing as much as possible. I keep reading and doing all kinds of listening. But one thing I sure know would happen in having a good material is either success finds you or you find success. Be good in such a way that no one can reject you.
