Screenwriting : Producers / Writers - database by Stevan Šerban

Producers / Writers - database

Is it perhaps time for Stage 32 to create a database of scripts for its members? On this site (which is very well organized) we all discuss various topics and problems, and then we go to another site and put our script to be available to producers, agents, managers ...

I think that with the creation of such a database, this site would be even better.

What do you think?

Stevan Šerban

Of course, this site is great (I've been a member for seven years), but why wouldn't it be even better?

Rob Jones

I believe you can attach scripts on your logline page or at least you use to be able to.

Stevan Šerban

There is a big difference when you put a script on your profile and when there is a database.

When you have a database, it is possible to search by genre, budget, number of characters, number of locations, target group ...

Also, perhaps the most important thing that other sites do not have, and Stage32 has, is that producers can get an impression of a particular writer through discussions in which that writer expresses his opinion on the site.

Because when producers are looking for a new screenplay, they are much less interested in the screenplay, and much more in what kind of personality the writer is about and what his potential is!

Maybe I’m wrong, but I still think I am!

I think diversity in some places isn’t good. This forum would change. People would talk differently and potentially less honest, if they thought agents and producers were watching.

Ferrari doesn’t make a tow truck because other people do it. These people do it well. So Ferrari focuses on being the best they can in their market segment.

Stage32 fills a need in the market. The script listing space is already well serviced. I believe it would be more trouble and cost than it is worth.

Wow, wow, wow... Craig

What does it mean that someone on this site will not honestly comment on some topics from the film and TV industry, if a script database is created here?

Do you think that producers, agents, managers ... who read our colleague's script on another site, which has a database, and who is a member here, will not find his comments when they "Google" them?

That's just one question!

But you also asked a much harder question: "Does that mean that if you want to sell a screenplay, you can't honestly comment on topics and problems related to the film and TV industry?"

Very interesting thesis!

Hi Nick!

I'm glad you mentioned the recommended. What does recommended "really" mean?

Craig D Griffiths

Stevan Šerban there are a lot of questions that start with “this may be a newbie ...”. I think people are just more open and willing to be vulnerable in a community of like minded people. I think people may begin to use the forum to show how smart they are if they think it will impress a producer.

Plus supporting a service I that come with a cost. It wouldn’t be cheap. There are already services. So stage32 would have to fight for market share. Otherwise the service has no value.

I am not sure there is value for anyone, unless they have something new to offer.

Stevan Šerban

Craig, If someone thinks he/she should impress a producer then why would he/she be “less honest”, as you said? There is little contradiction in your statements.

Also, services that have a database with scripts also have blogs, posts, discussions ...

As a longtime member, I am satisfied with how this site works, but I think that creating a database with scripts would only make this site even better.

Craig D Griffiths

Stevan Šerban we are going to have to agree to disagree. I believe the simple act of observing people makes them act differently. If this is honest or dishonest I would be able to say.

But I believe with all my heart that it would change from a place of help to an opportunity for point scoring.

A bit like the difference between here an reddit. There are good people at reddit as well. But I would say there are a lot more people in it for themselves on Reddit. I wouldn’t like that to come here.

As much as it might enhance the site in some form. They would have to attract producers. This would also be difficult (and potential expensive for them) as there are a number of site already in existence. It is not like Stage32 has exclusive access to us (which would be a great value proposition). Unfortunately, we are on those other site, so no exclusivity.

Perhaps a logline lounge. That is a service I would like them to offer. So we can go and easily review and help each other develop loglines.

Stevan, have you looked over Stage 32 platform? Like really look at it? There's about 15 private lounges for paid Members, plus a weekly Writer's room. Plus pitch sessions. Contests. Script consulting. That's a lot of work as is and now you want them to host scripts for your benefit.

Stevan Šerban

Dan, Do you know what a database means in English? Apparently not.

Please see Dan's and Nick's comments above. From the very beginning, what, 9, almost 10 years ago, S32 has always been about networking and relationship building, and education. Plus, each member has a profile page to post/list and share work: videos, reels, images, loglines, scripts, links to personal websites, links to their other social media, etc.

Also, please look under "Browse" found in the upper menu bar: https://www.stage32.com/browse. There, you can search the S32 membership database and seek out members by occupation and/or location. You can also browse LISTED loglines by genre, and/or by script length, and/or by keywords. You can rate loglines if you choose. You can click on any logline that interests you and it takes you to that writer's posted logline and synopsis page, and, if the writer did choose to include it, the screenplay.
