I found this rather enticing offer for "Over 280 Free Sound Effects for Videos, Apps, Films, and Games". Clearly, as most "free" things are this is a ploy to be added to someone's mailing list, and there could be worse mailing lists than ShutterStock. Also, you can easily unsubscribe.
But I digress. What have free stuff have you used on projects? Was it successful or lame? What liberties did it afford you with your other line items? SHARE BELOW!

www.freesound.org has about 20,000+ sound effects. Some cost, but most are free with just a credit to the creator. some of them are terrible, but can be manipulated, and some are really good. Sort of like a flea market :)
https://videohive.net isn't free, but has REALLY inexpensive footage and effects (I've bought effects for $6, and some footage for $10)
As a set designer, I have dumpster dove more times than I (or my wife) would like to admit. I've even gone to the dump to get old appliance parts, etc. The walls in the pic attached are made entirely from pallets I found in the garbage of a print shop near my house. the porthole was made out of foam from a dumpster of a foam shop near me that makes medallion decorations for house exteriors. It was broken, so they couldn't sell it. Fixed it with some craft glue and a stick.

commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page has a boat load of free images (many do require you credit them) ranging from the old to new, interesting to mundane. Used some for a history video I was putting together. Whether they were "successfull or lame" is yet to be seen lol.

I often use sound effects from free sources, and they usually are fine. Though often we rework them or combine them with others to make them unique or fit the scene better. For sound effects, I often se freesound.org as well as freesoundlibrary.com, freetousesounds.com, freesoundslibrary.com and several more.

Some are good, some not so much. I always record a room tone or wild track whenever I shoot and then mix/match & blend as needed. Occasionally I record my own.

I use Pro Create and PS Express for editing my book covers and ads. And I create those with Canva. The only editor I had to buy is Comic Draw (about $10). Also creating voice samples with Voice Memoes.
