Hello all, my name is Michael Donovan I'm very new to screen writing so I'm currently reading books and taking some online courses. I'm looking to network. If anyone has any advice its much appreciated. Have a great day.
remember that a screenplay is a blueprint for A VISUAL STORYTELLING EXPERIENCE... don't ever forget that.. if you are writing anything BUT that... just write a book or a play
watch movies like The Departed and No Country for Old Men to understand cinematic language/and cinematic catharsis... you are new.. you have a chance to not be a jerk off writer trying to write screenplays when they should be writing plays or novels... develop your cinematic eye if you truly want to write a screenplay
Welcome Michael Donovan. I recommend not over-reading screenwriting books. I'm a fan of the Syd Field books. Definitely read tons of scripts. The Stage 32 platform is great for networking and learning. I recommend checking out The Writers' Room where you can network with fellow writers and learn how to improve your writing and get a chance to hear from working industry professionals. Reach out to Jason Mirch Director of Script Services (j.mirch@stage32.com) who leads our group and has wealth of info on scriptwriting.
Thank you David for your advice. I love those movies I'll rewatch them. I did try writing a book but I got hung up on the visual and couldn't get what I wanted on the page. I think screen writing is definitely the way to go. Thanks again.
Writing a book is hard Michael Donovan. No doubt. Still working on and off on my fantasy novel. I'm going to windup turning it into an animation screenplay.
Hi Michael. You're doing the right thing, reading books and taking courses. The Webinars here on Stage32 under Education are really amazing. If you're looking for community, the Writer's Room is absolutely amazing. We learn so much about the craft and the business and are super supportive of each other's projects no matter what stage you're at!
