Introduce Yourself : Writer/Script Analyst by Nicole F. Burney

Nicole F. Burney

Writer/Script Analyst

Hello:

I'm Nicole, and I'm a freelance writer and script analyst. I started with poetry when I was small, but I just love the art of storytelling in general. I got into screenplays because it's another way I fall in love with language.

My tastes vary tremendously, but I tend to lean towards Horror, Scifi/Fantasy, Historical, or Mystery/Thrillers (i.e. Lovecraft Country, The VVitch [2015], Alien, The Silence of the Lambs). I'm also a sucker for anime like Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train or Samurai Champloo. I have a soft spot for British mysteries too.

Hey, Nicole! Oh, MAN! Were in the Stage 32 Writer's Room this past Wednesday? We were joined by Jordan Peele's Development Executive, Jonathan Harris. Such good info in that Q&A! If you haven't seen it, the recording is in The Vault in the Writer's Room! Definitely reach out to our Director of Script Services, Jason Mirch, and get a link for your first month free: J.Mirch@stage32.com

Ooo, LOVE British mysteries, but only know so much Anime. How do you feel about Avatar: The Last Airbender? :-D

Nicole F. Burney

Hi Karen:

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely check into that. I liked the Avatar series that aired on Nickelodeon. It was just a fantastic story. It wasn't dumbed down or too saccharine either, which can sometimes happen with shows geared towards a younger audience.

Karen "Kay" Ross

I 100% agree! And the thing the film got wrong was all of the drama without any humor (okay, and complete cultural/racial insensitivity and appropriation, they got that WAY wrong). I've met more than a few Stage 32 members who are fans and we've joked about starting our own fan club HA! We may put together a screening in June around the Summer Solstice, though, if you'd like to join! Could be fun to meet other professionals who happen to like a Nickelodeon show. :-D

Also, definitely check out the Animation Lounge. Some really great artists there I think you'd enjoy collaborating with. Cénack comes to mind with the horror/SciFi/fantasy interest: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/animation

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect! And, of course, feel free to reach out at any time. Cheers!

Melany Markham

Hi Nicole. What are you working on at the moment?

Nicole F. Burney

Hello Melany. Right now, I'm on my third draft of a poetry collection, and rewriting a couple pieces of fiction. One thing that surprised me was something that started out as a poem, turned into a larger Fantasy story, and morphed again into a screenplay. I'm also on the lookout for any scripts in need of coverage. Feels good to be able to create after so many months of anxiety and drought.

How about yourself? Anything in the works?
