Sell or not to sell

I know I will have to sell my script, my pockets or network not deep enough and probably go fund me might not suffice. My question is will I still get writer credit and if not, what might be the terms? I’m new at this and just gathering info.

It's all a matter of contract when you sell your script. Don't sell it or let it be optioned unless the terms give you credit as the writer and/or creator.

As someone who hasn't sold (I haven't started shopping around yet), all I can tell you is to think very hard about what you want out of any deal and be quite upfront about it.

From example, for me, it's a dealbreaker that I must direct in order to sell, so I know this is one thing I should work around. Maybe I'll take a financially less profitable deal, as long as I get to direct.

As long as you and the other party know what you want and can find common ground, the deals shouldn't be too hard to reach.

i sold original spec scripts and wrote gigs for non-union companies and credits mean 0. Zero. Just whatever money we agreed. I dont own the material once I sign my name on the dotted line, and the new owners dont have to keep you around. They can hire whoever to rewrite.

Now, if you're able to write and sell to a union company like a studio, credits mean everything! Salaries, in theory, are based on credits. Produced union writers also get residuals for the life of the movie or tv show. Residuals can be cents and it can also be millions.

Thank you, all. Great info and advice. I’m willing this segment into my 2022 year and with my name attached.
