Screenwriting : Juggling two scripts by Peter Roach

Peter Roach

Juggling two scripts

I swear when I sit to write one the next scene, the next scene from another script pops into my head.

I am meandering, this is not good.

I need a mind control guru.

Ingrid Wren

Try juggling a screenplay with a board evaluation report...

It’s good to have a jotter pad handy so when thoughts for other titles come into your head you can quickly note them down for later. It helps you to move back onto the script at hand and not worry about forgetting the idea for the other one you just came up with.

Peter Roach

Ewan, I like that jotter pad idea. It started when I deleted ACT III of the first screenplay because there was no ZING BAM BOOM to ending. I started the next screenplay but a better ACT III of the first keeps popping into my head.

Debbie Croysdale

@Peter I get you! Characters from another script butt in with characters of script I’m writing and yell out . “Hey I’m before him/her/world about to die ETC.” It’s no odd schizoid quirk but lateral and vertical thinking at odds. We pick up the pen with “a plan” vertical thought with careful prior summing up but a “lateral” emotional indirect creative thought takes over.

Peter Roach

Rohit, I used to be Project Manager - that nerdy IT thing - I was very planned and focused on task completion, then on to the next. That is very much like your advice.

But creativity is a little slippery. I am not happy with predictability. First script while good was predictable. I created several other scenarios for an ending.

But like you said; I have to put one aside until the other is finished. Take notes, put it aside.
