What do you do, to write a hard scene?

Hey all,

Ken here. I am writing a story about a kidnapped girl who is sold to others. I am about to write a scene in it that is very disturbing. it's about rape.-- To get myself ready to write something so hard and disturbing like rape. I walk away, think about it in my head, how I want it to come across. do I write the full details or do I just suggest the image? I think about all of this long and hard-- then I take a deep breath and begin to write out the scene.

My question to you all? What do you do, to write a hard scene?

PLEASE, DON'T TELL ME HOW TO WRITE MY SCENE. Tell me how you get ready to write a hard scene like this.

Kenny

Kiril Maksimoski

Aim is to make it unforgettable. Depends on the sub-genre but most horror/thriller movies rely on harsh/taboo or whatever makes viewer uncomfortable scenes so treat it as a selling point no matter how uneasy the subject is. However, the catch is to tone it to the rest of the story. You cannot have "Texas chainsaw massacre" "Dinner" scene in "Scream" if you know what I mean...

Craig D Griffiths

I don’t have get ready for it. I just describe what is seen. I think in visual terms. What I concern myself with is how I get the audience to feel. Where they start and where I leave them.

Harry Kakatsakis

I don't find it too hard to write uncomfortable or emotionally charged scenes on the surface. I have not written a rape scene, so there's that. That might be harder, but if I am stuck, or need to look at a scene/moment in a different way, I will try to access my subconscious by thinking about it when I'm not writing, especially when my body is engaged with something else. Driving, falling asleep, bathing, exercising. Once I can tap my subconscious and come up with something I like, then I'm ready to write.

What I am asking all of you is. How do YOU, ready yourself to write a hard scene? I wrote how I ready myself in writing a hard scene. "I walk away, think about it in my head, how I want it to come across. do I write the full details or do I just suggest the image? I think about all of this long and hard-- then I take a deep breath and begin to write out the scene."

Doug Nelson

I've already written that; a FL script titled 'HALT' as a coming of age story. Be careful how you handle it as it's almost certain to receive an 'R' rating which tends to limit your audience.

Dan Guardino

Like Doug said. I would write it like a fight scene or a sex scene and not be detailed. For example: They rape her and let the director and producer figure out how they want to show it on film.
