Scriptwriting a series

Hello there, I´m Victoria Espinoza, just getting started in the industry as a young writer, also  I'm new in the platform so I´m not exactly sure that I can post any questions here, but I wanted to ask if you have the knowledge about how the script has to get done when writing a series in terms of: if it's a series, do I have to do one script for each one of the episodes? like In different documents, or just one?

Again, sorry if this is not the right room or place to ask a question. But anyway, beforehand, thank you.

Ewan Dunbar

Hi Victoria. Asking questions and discussing is exactly what the lounges are for : ) Usually when presenting a series you would have a project deck/bible which goes into the detail about how you see the show playing out (logline, season 1 synopsis, character breakdowns and arcs etc.) and a script for the pilot episode.

Nathan Smith

It should be fine to write the different episodes within the same document as long as you page break between them so that when printed each episode is self-contained.

Michael Howard

Welcome Victoria!

Mike Romoth

This is a friendly community, so ask away. Even if you ask in the wrong lounge, one of the helpful S32 gremlins will probably move it to the correct place so it gets the response you were looking for. Since this is the internet, the lounges all get their fair share of grandstanding lunatics and egomaniacal whackos who pop in for a day or two, declare themselves to be living gods, and then disappear never to return. As long as you remain humble and are willing to listen to others, this is a great place to learn and explore your interests. Check back often and you will grow and grow.

Victoria Espinoza

Thank you to the 4 of you, I really appreciate your comments.

Ewan Dunbar so I understand that for pitching specifically, there should be only a bible, pitching document and the pilot episode, thank you.

Nathan Smith thank you, I will take your advice and do it in the same document while I finish it and try to sell it(:

Michael Howard thank you very much!

Mike Romoth I appreciate your common, I´m here so I can learn as much as possible from all of. the professionals and professions, even those who are starting in this just like me. Thank you.

Ewan Dunbar

Yes. People usually make either a pitch deck or bible - bibles usually cover similar information but also go into more information about each episode.

Jonathan Kramer

Out of curiosity, what genre, episode length (30-60 min) and have you written any pilots? I was writing features for awhile and switched to episodic which allows for more characters and greater arc due to seasons; I also like the shorter formats

Victoria Espinoza

Ewan Dunbar thank you.

Jonathan Kramer I estimate about 30min per episode and yes, I have a pilot episode and a complete first season . Yes in fact I was actually writing it as a movie, but after a webinar I decided I should do it in a series format. why do yo like shorter formats?

Jonathan Kramer

A lifelong student of human behavior, attention span tends to be short, especially with the vast amount of content today. That plus my preference for dramedy or ground breaking series like Twilight Zone, I prefer 30 minute episodes to longer formats. What genre are you working with?

Victoria Espinoza

Jonathan Kramer oh okay, yeah, unless it needs more time. I'm writing psychological terror and drama

Jonathan Kramer

VERY popular genres, aka lots of competition. I've been researching a new direction to spin the Twilight Zone idea since Serling's writing was dark commentary on humanity, politics and more..Not there yet, but its slow bubbling to the surface. Very best of success!

Victoria Espinoza

Jonathan Kramer yes! I´m a fan of those genres also haha. With patience im sure you will be able to do it! thank you so much, I appreciate it and wish you the best!
