Filmmaking / Directing : Art in films by Ken Keegan

Art in films

I always see contemporary artwork in scenes that are brightly colored but seem to lack quality. I would be interested in hanging my art in movie scenes. Can anyone suggest a good way to get exposure for fine art. I'm sure there are a lot of independent films that could use this but the agencies may charge too high a fee. I would be willing to work with film makers on making this happen at an independent film budget price. Not that I don't think I'm worth a high price but I love the idea of collaborating with unique directors that have low budgets but do quality work.

Ken, I agree. I've contributed some original art to films in which I was working as a prop designer. I believe that real art raises the production value. Unfortunately, some art department directors continue to look for cheap shortcuts --- but I've heard a great alternative is renting art for film. Look for a local company that might be hooking up artists, or offer the service on your own.

Thanks, Jane. I've had a couple of art galleries and found innovative ways to sell art. The buyer could purchase a painting and then could exchange it later for the balance (it was a one year deal, price going down by 10% a month... or rent a painting for a month at 10% the price). Probably should promote that service myself and expand if it is successful to other artists. Screw them there cheap art directors! hee hee... or ....do you know anyone in the Bay area I could contact about using my art in films/tv/theater?

Ken depending where you live there are companies that do nothing but supply art for film and tv. If you're in an area where not much production takes place you may need to be doing some networking. On a lot of independent films I think art gets overlooked as does a lot of set dressing consideration. If you do have a set dresser or props person they're usually an artist like Jane said. I have a friend in Toronto who actually organized a number of her artist friends into a bit of an art rental agency.
